Golden Globe Noms Are Out. But Does Anyone Care?

On Monday, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) announced the nominations for the 79th annual Golden Globe Awards to little fanfare. That’s because the organization has been mired in controversy over the lack of diversity among its membership and reportedly questionable ethical practices.

  • NBC, which aired the awards ceremony for many years, announced it would not broadcast the 2022 show because "change of this magnitude takes time and work."
  • The ceremony is slated for Jan. 9, but organizers have not released any details about where it would take place or who would attend.
  • The group tweaked their own rules this year so no one had to put forth a submission to be eligible for Globes consideration.

Excitement Grows Around CES

Last week, the Consumer Technology Association (CTA) announced that in the last 10 days, 200 additional companies had signed up to exhibit and an additional 10,000 attendees had registered to attend CES 2022 in person in Las Vegas Jan. 5-8, despite fears about the Omicron variant.

  • CES 2022 will feature new categories including Food Tech, Space Tech, and NFTs, and the automotive sector is tracking for record growth with over 200 exhibitors, a 30% increase over CES 2020, according to the association’s release.
  • Attendees must be fully vaccinated with a vaccine approved by the FDA or the World Health Organization.
  • “We're not unrealistic: the show's going to be smaller this year,Jean Foster, senior vice president of marketing and communications for the Consumer Technology Association, told Gadgets 360. "It allows us to widen the aisles and accommodate social distancing."

Coachella Sues Live Nation

Goldenvoice, the AEG-owned company that founded the Coachella Valley Music and Artist Festivalfiled a complaint in California claiming that a new festival called Coachella Day One 22, which is connected to Live Nation, infringes on the original festival’s trademark.

  • Coachella Day One 22 is slated for Dec. 31 with headliners DJ Diesel and rapper E-40.
  • Goldenvoice is charging that the defendants are “intentionally trading on the goodwill of” the Coachella name by promoting “a directly competitive live music event,” as well as copying the look of the original festival’s imaging.
  • Coachella Day One 22 is described as “part festival, part carnival, and part circus,” advertising features such as LED installations, interactive environments, aerial artists, live painters, and more, which does sound awfully similar to the original fest.
